Helen Claire Martin of Audubon, PA died on January 11 after a short illness.
Born on April 13, 1931 in Montreal, Canada, Helen was the daughter of the late Stephen and Gladys Brown.
She was a graduate of MacDonald College of McGill University and Edinboro University, PA. In her early career, she was a kindergarten teacher and director, later serving for 21 years as an administrator for Lawrence County Head Start, New Castle, PA. During that time, she traveled extensively as a Head Start program evaluator and a reader of Federal grants in Washington D.C.
She resided in New Wilmington, PA for 54 years with her husband, Clarence, a professor of music at Westminster College. While active in the community, raising their children and working, they travelled extensively together, organizing overseas tours for the college students and alumni, up to and following their retirement. They spent 16 years enjoying their home in Jensen Beach, FL, until Clarence’s death in 2013, at which time Helen moved to the Shannondell community in Audubon, PA.
Helen is survived by her four sons - Stephen (Tina) of Albuquerque, NM, Barry (Sally) of Silverthorne, CO, Douglas of Wynnewood, PA, and Jeffrey (Leo) of Havertown, PA, as well as three grandchildren - Drew, Ellen, and Peter. She was preceded in death by her sister Doreen (Mrs. John Leyland).
A burial service will be held at a later date in the Columbarium at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Stuart, Fl.
