Harold Key, born September 16, 1937, passed away on October 23, 2023, with his son Curtis by his side.
Harold was born in Register, Georgia, and proudly served in the Navy from 1955 to 1966, and the Air Force from 1966 to 1981. He served in the Vietnam War as a jet engine mechanic based in Ubon, Thailand, and had fond memories of being stationed at RAF Upper Heyford in England in the 70s. After retiring from the Air Force Harold worked for the family business, Mitchell Electronics in Jacksonville, Florida, and then as a purchasing agent for U.S. Gypsum. He spent the rest of his career as a bulk mail handler with the U.S. Post Office.
Harold was proud to have furthered his education with coursework at Jacksonville Community College, with his favorite class being a world literature course. He most loved Don Quixote. Early in his retirement Harold loved to fish, spending time on the St. John’s River in Jacksonville, and on the lakes around Palatka, Florida. Harold loved his crime and mystery programs on television, and religiously watched The Price is Right, Jeopardy, and The Wheel of Fortune. One of his favorite memories was spending two weeks traveling throughout the South of France with his wife and son.
Harold is survived by his wife Frances, his son Curtis, and his sisters Charlotte (Gail) and Carolyn. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends. May he rest in peace. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Vietnam Veterans of America at https://vva.org/donate/.
