Vinroy
Dunswell
Mar 6, 1962 — Aug 19, 2026
Hoy”, “Wagwan”… To sum up your legacy onto one page would be a disservice to how much you cared for your family, how much you cared for the voiceless. A heart of gold with the fist of iron, your life was a leap of faith, you never knew what was going to happen but like the lion you were, you always came out successful, you taught us to dream with our eyes open, to trust the leap and to trust in faith. This page does not mirror your excellence, it does not reflect all your legacy, this is just a glimpse of the journey walked. Like always, it’s never goodbye, only see you.
Vinroy Henry Dunswell, Age 64, passed away peacefully on August 19th 2026, in Jefferson Einstein hospital, in Norristown PA. Born on March 6, 1962, in Wakefield, Jamaica, to the late Regina Garden and Egbert Dunswell, Vinroy lived a life of compassion, love, faith, and benevolence.
He was the third of ten children following his older siblings Dapley Clark and Joy and was followed by Carl, Nijal, Dave, Delline, Markus, Sharlet, and Sean. From the beginning, Vinroy held an especially close bond with his sister Joy, his brother Carl, and his mother, Regina. Carl remembers the two of them as inseparable in childhood: “He was the smoke and I was the fire, because the two of us were together. Smoke follow fire and fire follow smoke.” That closeness stayed with them from dawn to dusk for years.
Educated in Maldon Primary School in Maroon Town, Saint James. Those who knew of Vinroy understood the values he had in work ethic and family. Working was the foundation for his discipline, while family was the root of his constancy, from working in a corn field for a single dollar a day, to walking for miles to get groceries to support his siblings. He was independent, a protector, a leader, led by faith. It was these traits that carried him from Wakefield to Hanover, and eventually across the sea. In 1988 he traveled to Canada to work on farms and construction, building churches, then returned home to Jamaica for a time before setting out again migrating to the United States in 1989.
Vin held various jobs throughout his career, such as construction, working on the property of the Millers, tending to their farm animals and garden, but he found his long-term place as a chef working for the Sheraton Hotel, where he dedicated over 10+ years before becoming their executive chef.
Known for his cooking and caring for others, Vin’s home was always filled with an aroma of delicious Caribbean meals prepared with love. Vin would love to make curry chicken/goat, ox tails, rice and peas, red snapper, along with steak, there would never be a time when you entered his home, and he was not cooking a meal for his guest. He loved to invite his children over for meals, everyone would gather at the table as he would lay out each dish and before they would enjoy the fest from the Islands, he would always pray over the food and his loved ones.
In his earlier years, Vinni married his first wife, Sue, and together they welcomed his first child, Susan. After a few years they their marriage came to an end and Vinni eventually met Sherri Young in the late 90’s. who he spent over 20+ years together with and welcomed their 3 wonderful children, Sharayah Dunswell, Shamere Dunswell, and Shavani Dunswell. Together Vinnie and Sherri created a loving family that filled the years with memories, and the joy of watching their children grow. When their chapter came to a close in 2019, while working at the Sheraton Hotel, Vinnie met Cherie, what started as a friendship soon became best friends with an unbreakable bond that was united in holy matrimony on August 26th 2020.
Vin will be remembered as a man of strength, love, compassion, and unshakable determination qualities he carried with him from the corn fields of Jamaica to the suburbs of Montgomery County he came to call home. He leaves behind a legacy measured not in what he owned, but in the family he built and the people he loved along the way. He is survived by his wife Cherie, his children Susan, Sharayah Dunswell, Shamere Dunswell, Shavani Dunswell, his grandchildren Suri “Zuri” Johnson, and his siblings, and the many family and friends whose lives he touched. Vinnie leaves behind a legacy of unconditional love, unwavering faith, and selfless service that will continue to inspire all who knew him. Though he will be deeply missed, his family finds comfort in knowing that he lived a life he often describes as “Grateful” and “blessed”.
