Obituary

Ernest "Ernie" Weldon Reid Jr., a loving father, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 11, 2025, at the age of 78. Born on November 3, 1946, in Chicago, Illinois, Ernie was the cherished son of the late Ernest and Clarice Reid.

In 1951, Ernie's family moved to Philadelphia, where he attended Gesu Parochial School from 1952 to 1958. During this time, Ernie proudly served as an altar boy at Gesu Church, beginning in the third grade. He often recalled with pride how he memorized all the Latin prayers to serve faithfully on the altar—an accomplishment that remained a source of joy and honor for him throughout his life. He continued his education in the Philadelphia public school system, graduating from South Philadelphia High School in 1965.

Shortly after graduation, Ernie was drafted into the United States Army during the Vietnam War era in 1965. He was stationed in Germany until 1969, serving with honor and dedication.

Ernie was married to the late Delores Brown Reid, who passed away in 2024. Together, they shared a life built on love, laughter, and family. He was the proud father of Ernest Weldon Reid III, who brought him immense joy and pride.

After completing his military service, Ernie built a long and steady career, working for Bell Telephone and later the Philadelphia Post Office. From 1972 to 1982, he owned and operated the beloved Hawthorn Deli in South Philadelphia alongside his younger brother, Eddie Reid. On weekends, Ernie could often be found behind the bar at several popular South Philadelphia establishments. His shifts were always packed with patrons who enjoyed his warm personality, quick wit, and deep knowledge of sports and world affairs.

Following his retirement, Ernie brought his skills and creativity to Atlantic City, where he worked as a chef at the famed Taj Mahal casino. His culinary talents and genuine hospitality left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

Above all, Ernie's greatest joy was his family. He will be lovingly remembered by his son, Ernest Weldon Reid III; his grandchildren, Kiana S. Reid, Kaeli S. Reid, Kori S. Reid, Kaleb M. Reid, and Kamille M. Reid; his siblings, Elizabeth Nathanson, Deidra Campbell, Michael Reid and his wife Rosemarie, Donna Settles and her husband William, Delvita Reid, Tojuana Conway, and Robin Reid; and his many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and countless friends. His memory will live on through the stories, laughter, and love shared by those who knew him best.

Visitation will be held on Friday, August 22, 2025, at 10:00 AM, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM at New Hope Temple Baptist Church, 312 Manheim St, Philadelphia, PA 19144. The family welcomes all flowers to be sent directly to the church to honor Ernie's life.
